· How do I get started?

You will need a Goshen Public Library (GPL) card or Elkhart Public Library (EPL) card in good standing and your PIN. You will also need an Internet connected computer or mobile device (such as a tablet or smartphone). In some cases you will need free software available from the Help menu on our OverDrive Website or from the app store on your mobile device.

Browse our catalog of eBooks & eAudiobooks at myepl.overdrive.com.  Sign in to your account using your library card number and PIN. When you find a book you want to read, click on the title and select “Borrow”. You can read in your browser or transfer items to certain portable devices by selecting the “Download” option.


· What software do I need to download titles?

Read in your browser with the OverDrive Read option. Once you’ve borrowed an eBook, click the “Read (in your browser)” button to begin reading an eBook in your browser, no additional software required. Instructions are available for reading offline. Note: Not all browsers are compatible with offline reading mode. If you use a Kindle Fire, you may need to download a second browser. The Kindle Fire default browser, Silk, is not 100% compatible.

For tablets and smartphones, download the OverDrive app from your device’s app store to listen to mp3 audiobooks and read ePUB eBooks. The OverDrive app must be authorized with an OverDrive account or an Adobe ID. Both options require you to have an email account. Kindle format eBooks can be downloaded to your Kindle app.

For Audiobooks on a computer or portable player, you will need OverDrive Media Console installed on your computer. Titles can be transferred to many compatible mp3 or WMA players.

For Adobe EPUB ebooks on a computer or eReader, you will need Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer. Adobe Digital Editions will also ask you to create an Adobe ID to authorize your computer and eReader. You will need to have an email account. Once a title is downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions, it can be transferred to an eReader using the USB cord.

For Kindle ebooks, you will need to access your Amazon.com account. Kindle ebooks can be sent to your Kindle Fire, Kindle App or transferred via USB to a Kindle eReader.


· Is OverDrive compatible with Windows 8?

Yes, special instructions for using Windows 8 are available in OverDrive Help.


· What eReader devices are compatible with OverDrive eBooks?

· What mp3 devices are compatible with OverDrive?

A list of compatible mp3/portable devices.


· I don’t have a PIN for my account, who do I contact?

 If you have a GPL card, please come into the library to create a PIN for your account.  If you have an EPL card, you can contact the library by email or phone (574) 522-5669 and we will create or change your PIN.


· Why can’t I log in to OverDrive?

If your resident Goshen Public Library Card or Elkhart Public Library Card is not in good standing, having more than $10.00 in fines and fees, you will not be able to access your OverDrive account.

Access is also denied if your account has expired.

Please visit your home library to renew your card, pay fines, or establish a new account.


· Is it possible to search only for items available for checkout?

Yes, select Advanced Search and click inside the box labeled “Show only titles with copies available”.


· How do I check out eBooks and read them on my Nook?

For users of the NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet™ and NOOK Color™: use the OverDrive Media Console app available in the NOOK Apps™ storefront. This NOOK app enables users to wirelessly borrow eBooks and mp3 audiobooks from the library. An Adobe ID is needed to authorize these devices.

For other NOOK devices, follow these steps to download EPUB eBooks and mp3 eAudiobooks via a USB connection:

1. Go to http://downloads.myepl.org
2. Click Advanced Search to select Adobe EPUB eBook or MP3 audiobook from the Format dropdown menu and click Search.
3. Select a title and click the “Borrow” button.
4. Sign in to your account using your library card number and PIN.
5. Click the Download button that appears next to the title and click inside the box next to the correct format.
6. Click “Confirm & Download”.
7. Click Open to automatically view the eBook in Adobe Digital Editions or the audiobook in OverDrive Media Console.
8. To transfer an eBook, attach your Nook to the computer using the USB cord.
9. In Adobe Digital Editions, click the Library View icon (in the upper left corner).
10. Click and drag the eBook to the Nook icon in the left pane. The Copy Documents dialog box is displayed and the title is transferred. When transfer is complete, the Copy Documents dialog box closes.
11. Disconnect the Nook from the computer.
12. Open the Nook Library. The eBook will appear in your My Stuff, My Documents or My Files folder on the Nook and in the Digital Editions folder on the Color Nook and Nook Tablet.

13. To transfer an audiobook, attach your player to the computer using the USB cord.
14. In OverDrive Media Console, click “Transfer” then click “OK” to download to the default folder. To save time or when using a slow Internet connection, you can download one part at a time.
15. Disconnect the player from the computer.


· How do I check out Kindle titles?

1. Go to http://downloads.myepl.org
2. Click Advanced Search, select Kindle from the Format dropdown menu and click Search.
3. Select a title and click the “Borrow” button.
4. Sign in to your account using your library card number and PIN.
5. Click the Download button that appears next to the title and click inside the box next to Kindle Book.
6. Click “Confirm & Download”. This opens the Amazon.com website. You may be required to sign in with your Amazon.com account if you are not already logged in.
7. Select a device or Kindle reading app from the drop-down menu under the “Deliver to:” option.
8. Click the ‘Get library book’ button to deliver the title to your Kindle Library. If the file does not transfer immediately, sync your device or app to download the book. An active Wi-Fi connection is required for wireless delivery to a Kindle device. On the Fire, activate the sync option by tapping the little “gear” icon in the corner or swiping from the top to reveal the “Sync” menu option. If your Kindle is not Wi-Fi capable or you do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, choose to send it to your device via USB (read Amazon’s instructions for transferring files via USB). Restrictions: Library books will not be delivered via your Kindle’s 3G connection. Note that Kindle 1st Generation, Kindle 2nd Generation, and Kindle DX only have 3G connection capabilities. Due to publisher restrictions, some titles may not be delivered wirelessly to your device and instead require USB transfer from your computer to your device. These restricted titles also may not be accessed on Kindle reading applications.

Kindle compatibility with library eBooks also takes full advantage of Amazon’s Whispersync technology. If you check out the eBook again at a later date or choose to purchase the book from the Kindle Store, all of your notes, bookmarks and highlights will be preserved. The last page read will also be synced between your Kindle and free Kindle reading app.

· Can I read EPUB formatted titles on my Kindle Fire?

Yes, EPUB titles may be downloaded to the Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD & other Android devices using the OverDrive Media Console app available from the Amazon Appstore for Android.


· Can the items be returned early?

Most eBooks can be returned early.  Click here for exceptions.

To return an eBook using the “Read (in your browser)” option:

1. Sign in to your OverDrive account and open your Bookshelf.
2. Click the “Return Title” button next to the book cover of the title that’s ready to be returned.

To return a Kindle title using your Kindle Library:

1. Log in to your account at Amazon.com.
2. Click on “Manage Your Content and Devices”, located in the “Your Account” tab.
3. To the left of the book title you want to return, click “Actions.”
4. Click “Return this book”.
5. Click “Yes” to confirm.

Using Adobe Digital Editions:

1. Open Adobe Digital Editions and select Library View.
2. Click the triangle next to the desired title or right click on the title.
3. Click “Return”.

mp3 Audiobooks can be returned early using the OverDrive mobile app, or the Windows PC version of the OverDrive Media Console. Due to licensing agreements, WMA titles cannot be returned before the lending period expires.


· How will I be notified when an item placed on Hold is ready for download?

You will receive an email notification, from donotreply@overdrive.com, to the email account you entered at the time you placed the hold. The only notification method available is email.


· Can items be renewed?

No, item renewals are not available.


· How many items can be checked out and for how long?

You can have up to 3 titles checked out at any given time. When you check out an item, the default loan period is 3 weeks (21 days) and this is the maximum amount of time you may have. You do have the option of changing the loan period to 7 days or 14 days before downloading.


· What is OverDrive One, and how do I use it to sync reading progress?

OverDrive One is a free, opt-in service available to OverDrive Media Console (OMC) 3 users. With an OverDrive One account, you can sync your reading progress, bookmarks, and saved libraries across devices. Instructions are available in the OverDrive Help Center.


· I can’t find what I am looking for. How can I get more help?
