Library Assistant Position in Adult & YA Services/Circulation Department 25 hours per week. .


Goshen Public Library is seeking a part-time Library Assistant to work 25 hours per week in our circulation area. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary as some days, evenings, and weekends are required.


Responsibilities include working at a public service desk, answering and routing calls, checking materials in and out, processing library cards, handling billing questions and payments, and other clerical-type duties. Computer competence required. Committed customer service representative preferred offering good organizational skills, attention to detail, enthusiasm for the work, and a positive mental attitude. Spanish language proficiency desired. Some college experience preferred.

The Goshen Public Library currently has an opening for Youth or Children’s Services Department Head.   The Goshen Library Board strongly supports services for children and teens as key parts of the Library’s mission.  Depending on the selectee’s overall qualifications/potential this position will be filled as Youth Services Department Head (who will provide/coordinate services to children and teens) or as Children’s Service Department Head (who will focus on children’s services provision).  This position is part of the management team.  The team works closely with the director to provide effective and efficient service to all patrons.


Goshen, Indiana (population approx. 35,000)  is a forward-looking and highly attractive community in which to live and work, located in Elkhart County in northern Indiana.    The region has growing business sectors, large and small farms with many Amish residents, good schools, attractive parks and other amenities, particularly for families.  Goshen is also adjacent to the city of Elkhart and about 20 miles from South Bend, home of the University of Notre Dame.


The Goshen Public Library recently established an innovative and well-used Resource Sharing Consortium with the nearby Elkhart Public Library.  Through the Consortium, all library users including children, teens and their parents now have easy access to the rich and varied collections of both institutions, as well as to even more services and programs than before.   The Consortium also features a user-friendly ILS system (Polaris), frequent inter-library deliveries, and increasingly offers opportunities for staff, particularly managers, to collaborate in creative new ways toward better service for all library users.


We are looking for applicants who:

Ÿ   Highly value books and reading as keys to helping young people of all backgrounds and abilities become good learners, to increase their opportunities for success and fulfillment in school and later life.

Ÿ   Have the experience/ability to provide effective, enjoyable library services and programs for children, teens and parents using all of the Library’s resources, print and non-print alike.

Ÿ   Have the experience/ability to supervise, motivate and inspire a department team of approx. 3.0 FTE employees.

Ÿ   Will work as a management team member with the director to help to inform the future priorities and goals of the Library.


Required Qualifications:

Ÿ  Masters of Library Science from a school accredited by the American Library Association, or substantial coursework toward completing this degree in the near future.

Ÿ  Experience with youth/children’s services (planning, implementing, coordinating), and with supervision/management.

Ÿ  Strong written and oral communication skills.

Ÿ  Experience/ability to build effective relationships with parents, educators and community organizations.

Ÿ  Must apply for and maintain an appropriate Indiana Librarian Certification including necessary LEUs within 5 years.



Spanish language proficiency.  Relevant coursework in children’s/teen services.   Experience managing a budget.  Experience serving teens as well as children.


Physical Demands: 

Frequently stand, walk, sit, bend and speak.  Frequently need to lift 10 pounds or less and push/pull 15 pounds or less.

Limited (mostly local) travel required.


Salary/Other Position Details:

This is a full-time (40 hour per week) FSLA exempt position.   It has variable hours including evenings and weekends.   Salary range is approximately $19-$23 an hour depending on qualifications.   The Library provides a monthly pay stipend for health care, paid leave, retirement fund contribution, support for professional education, conferences, etc., and other benefits.
